(ZEE = "Centre for Renewable Energy" in German)

With its diverse research and development facilities in the field of renewable energies, Freiburg provides the perfect location to establish an outstanding, noteworthy national Centre for Renewable Energy. The Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences is a centre of excellence for research and learning in the fields of environment and society and therefore offers an ideal basis for the broad theme of the M.Sc.-REM programme.

Numerous companies operating in the renewable energy sector are located in Freiburg and the surrounding area. Here, both commercial operations and pilot plants covering the full scope of eco-friendly energy technology are to be found (photo voltaics, solar thermal energy, solar cooling, wind power, geothermal energy, wood and biomass energy).

Furthermore, non-university scientific institutes of national and international repute, such as the Forest Research Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, the Institute for Applied Ecology and the Offenburg Polytechnic are based in the region.

Thus, through combination, coordination, and innovative, interdisciplinary collaboration in research and teaching, the success of the Centre for Renewable Energy is secured.

The goal of this interdisciplinary, cross-faculty Centre for Renewable Energy is to combine university related and unrelated research groups and facilities in research and education, offer an innovative Master programme, apply for an interdisciplinary PhD programme, as well as collectively perform interdisciplinary research.

The ZEE cross-links the partners´ applied fundamental research in the fields of solar energy, biomass, geothermal energy, energy efficiency and new energies with regard to practical research and development. It creates synergies and enables high-ranking research clusters.
